THE ORIGIN OF BRISBANE SOUTHSIDE
The southside of Brisbane is a large area of suburbs south of the Brisbane River. It is a diversified group of cultures, from the upmarket Bulimba through the Asian community at Sunnybank to the bustling business district at Springwood and beyond.
It has a full transportation infrastructure, with the city cat ferry service along the river, to the railway lines travelling south and huge bus network – all making sure commuters and travelers reach destinations.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane before moving on to the modern era of Brisbane’s Southside.
In September 1859, the Brisbane Parish Council was established. South Brisbane, although began as the South Ward in the early Brisbane City Council, which was made up entirely of districts, did not become a separate township until 1887, when the former South Ward united with the Woolloongabba Division.
Did you know? There was a large American navy presence in Brisbane during WWII, and the option to split the white and black American troops (segregation was the norm in some parts of America at the time) resulted in South Brisbane being designated as the city’s “black” neighbourhood, leaving the white troops to experience in what was regarded as the city’s better areas.
The infamous catastrophic flood happened in January 1974, following three weeks of uninterrupted rain. The Brisbane River, which passes through the city centre, overflowed, flooding the surrounding areas. In total, 16 people were killed, 300 were injured, 8,000 dwellings were destroyed, and 980 million was lost.
Southbank Parklands, which was created on the former World Expo 88 site, is now one of Brisbane’s most famous tourist destinations. The Queensland Conservatorium, QPAC, the Brisbane Wheel, the Nepal Peace Pagoda, Streets Beach, and GOMA are among the many popular tourism spots, or in fact just with the locals.
Weekend markets and live music venues at Southbank attract tourists throughout the day and late into the night, while Greek, Italian, Turkish and Vietnamese communities contribute to the creation of diverse restaurants.
Woolloongabba is ideal for sports fans, as it’s home to The Gabba – a primary sports venue, for Cricket (which hosts some Ashes tests every two years) and AFL – as The Gabba is home to the Brisbane Lions.
The Southside of Brisbane has undergone a significant transformation over the years and has expanded in population, never-ending infrastructure for construction and is now set to become a significant part of the 2032 Olympic Games.

ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR VS. LICENSED ELECTRICIAN
Is there any difference between hiring an electrical contractor or an electrician?
An electrician is a skilled tradesperson who has completed an electrical apprenticeship and obtained the necessary qualifications.
On the other hand, an electrical contractor is an electrician who has undergone additional training, holds relevant qualifications, and carries appropriate insurance coverage. An electrical contractor is licensed to employ electricians. In simple terms, an electrician typically works under the employment of an electrical contractor.
It’s important to note that electricians generally cannot undertake work directly for the public unless they are employed by an electrical contractor. Only the electrical contractor possesses the required insurance to safeguard homeowners and business owners from potential liability issues.
Work performed by an electrician under the supervision of an electrical contractor is closely monitored to ensure compliance with safety standards.
